Position Paper: Harmonised EU Sustainability Criteria Needed to Facilitate Necessary Growth in Biomass Power Generation [2010-06-04]

Jeppe Bjerg*, Chair of EURELECTRIC’s Task Force on Biomass reacting to the European Commission’s report on Biomass Sustainability, stated that “Common EU rules for biomass sustainability criteria are needed to facilitate an efficiently functioning biomass market and provide assurance that biomass cultivation  procured for large scale power production does not harm the environment.

Hans ten Berge, EURELECTRIC Secretary General stated that “EURELECTRIC sees biomass as key to meeting the EU’s 2020 targets, particularly as it is one of the only forms of baseload Renewables generation and because it can also be utilised in existing thermal power plants”.  Mr ten Berge stressed that “common market rules would ensure that biomass can grow to its full potential as a source of Renewable power generation”.
